That Dark, Inconsolable Sky

I passed through the fields that were rutted and ploughed As the lightning did flash and the thunder roared loud, While nearer and nearer the storm gathered force Unmoving, unerring it followed its course, Soon overhead the rain started to fall As the puddles were forming I heard the owl call, Its screech pierced the air and that harsh deathly cry Did ring through that dark, inconsolable sky. Yet I carried on with my heart filled with fear Whilst hoping and praying the storm clouds would clear, With nowhere to shelter from harsh driving rain That would not relent and did yield so much pain, The wind played a tune as it wailed and did moan Through the talons of branches that did creak and did groan, Still the tears of the evening reluctant to dry As they fell from that dark, inconsolable sky. I longed for the moonlight to break through the cloud Still the lightning did flash and the thunder roared loud, I was lost and alone and I cared not to stay Yet abandoned was I for I knew not the way, Through heath land and heather I crossed over fell So cold and so hungry with nowhere to dwell, I sank to my knees and I started to cry As I looked to that dark, inconsolable sky.
