Homecoming At Dawn

Over the white cliffs, over the downlands whirring,
Out of the dappled east with dawn aflame,
The moon pale in the sky, and the first birds stirring,
Homeward the war-scarred battle squadrons came.
Came . . . all but those who shall see no more below them
Mapwise the small green chequered countryside,
Places greatly loved that shall never again know them -
All that was England – all for which they died.
