Old Age

When I was a boy, innocent, lively and joyful
I thought and acted as a child without time
Hard riding me, tick tocking away the hours
Life seemed endless, death defied stranger
Thoughts of old age did not embrace me.
Summers of my youth were full of sunshine
Young lovers thinking themselves immortal
Untouched by fears of becoming old and feeble.
Old age has crept sly and ruthless slowing me down
Heart, lungs, brain, legs hurting when I walk
Yet still I think with a young man's mind
Steadfast with cherished memories of love
As my body fails and skin wrinkles
Death no longer a stranger knocking at the door.
