Sonnet 66: On Sonnets

Will Shakespeare, our greatest sonnet writer, Left his mark in history with his plays; Crafted his sonnets making his words brighter And his plays most enjoyable in all ways. Sonnets can be rich with eloquent words On love’s labour’s won or lost by rhyming Or writing about love as two young birds So penning a sonnet can be charming. But modern poets leave the sonnet alone And will write verse that may or may not flow About lovers who may have hearts of stone; Perhaps that’s the way poetry will go. Lots have changed in over four hundred years And some modern poets leave you in tears.
