She stood still on her balcony, a wondrous sight above. While Romeo, in ecstasy, surveyed her lips with love. And then, like Icarus, he fell, for she was all enough, To grant him Heaven and not Hell, as if a winsome dove. But she was far too practical, intent on marriage still, Yet his words seemed adorable, as if to bend her will. His purposes were kisses-led, contentment through each thrill, Perhaps tonight, content in bed, whether for good or ill. But true love caught him, trapped him fast, for she was such a catch, She was his dream girl, meant to last, seen as his perfect match. And then came plans that these two sought, their subtle schemes to hatch, No matter what their parents thought, and thus not up to scratch. Without repentance, what are we? Star-crossed or double-crossed? Without compassion, look and see how so much hope got lost! Both lovers dead, no room for doubt, as cold as Winter's frost. Regard the truth, as lies played out, and then count well the cost. Denis Martindale, for the 3rd of May 2024.
