Red Crested Pochard

In Nature, there are many names That modern Man bestows, And that is why this duck now claims The present name it shows. Without a photo on display, I would not have a clue, But now I do, what can I say? Except I never knew! This little bird is colourful, With colours all its own, And thus it looks adorable, Once it has fully grown. No wonder artists pause and draw, To capture such a sight, So filled with peace none should ignore Its beauty bathed in light. The silver streams and rivers, too, Compel us to come nigh, From busy days to rest and view Such birds land from the sky. They settle down and waddle on, Then leave behind the grass, To swim until some time has gone, To let the hours pass. Denis Martindale, the 5th of June 2023. The poem is based on the magnificent wildlife art painting by UK artist Stephen Gayford.
