Late Have I Loved You

In Confessions, Augustine
repented of being
consumed with
lesser beauties,
which distracted him
from the most beautiful God:
Late I have loved You,
Beauty so ancient
and so new,
late have I loved You!
And behold,
You were within me,
and I was outside,
and I sought you there,
and threw myself
deformed, upon
the beautiful
things You made.
