Ben for what used to be he has shed his last tears And he has not been to his hometown for decades of years But he likes to recall his younger years of the past And only the memories of what was does last A grandfather in his late sixties divorced from his wife Ben is a man who makes the most of his life He does not have a partner growing old on his own On his side of the town well liked and well known A long standing member of the town's football club One well known and well liked in the local pub He enjoys a few beers and the pub music and song And is always happy to join in the pub singalong Ben now in the ranks of the retired working men Next June of years he will be three score and ten A likeable fellow one generous and of spirit kind Growing old on his own and content in his mind.
