George Reginald Margetson

George Reginald Margetson was born in 1877 in Saint Kitts. He was educated at a Moravian school. Margetson arrived to the United States in 1897 and eventually settled in Boston. Margetson was the author of four poetry collections: Songs of Life (Sherman, French & Company, 1910); The Fledgling Bard and the Poetry Society (R.G. Badger, 1916), a one-hundred page poem about current events, reflections on the First World War, religion, and social conditions for Black people, among other subjects; Ethiopia’s Flight: The Negro Question; Or, The White Man’s Fear (1907), which he self-published; and England in the West Indies: A Neglected and Degenerating Empire (R.G. Badger, 1906). Margetson was included in James Weldon Johnson’s seminal anthology, The Book of American Negro Poetry (Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1922) and Robert T. Kerlin’s Negro Poets and Their Poems (Associated Publishers, Inc., 1923). Margetson died around 1952.
