I weep on Independence's day, every January first For the country of Haiti, independent, poor or destitute on paper I cry for a Haiti that her sons and daughters have devastated Robed, looted, vilified, humiliated, devastated and mistreated I cry for the innocent people, who suffer before the dusk of the morning Until the nocturnal veil falls. The nefarious and corrupt politicians Have stolen the future of our wandering children. Look, look everywhere Everywhere they go, they're discriminated against. Many have gone mad Sometimes, they even resort to committing suicide or jump off bridges Instead of facing misery, starvation, humiliation and narcissistic demons Our brave citizens also weep when their hands are handcuffed Their feet chained, their lips glued or clumped, where the brain rebels In spite of the threats and intimidation. Dear friends, I wail for Haiti. I weep again on the eighteenth of May, the Haitian's flag day The anniversary of the Haitian bicolor. Corruption defiled the smile From this beautiful pavilion. Things are even worse abroad In the newspapers, the pens keep on regurgitating or writing That our country is no longer the Pearl of the Antilles. They ridicule us And catapult nonsense towards us in daylight. Haiti, Haiti, my blue and red Shirt is wet, smeared with tears and droplets of ignominy Other brothers and sisters are also in tears for our dear homeland During this pandemic period, it's the entire world, which is weeping For Haiti, because Covid-19, the new coronavirus has the power to exterminate Our people who are skating not by choice in abject poverty and miasmatic Sewage and mud. I weep for the pride of Haiti and I pray every day For Haiti which is mistreated and humiliated. Haiti, you'll always be my love. I weep for the Haitian people. Believe me, poor people are resilient Our brothers and sisters are martyrs because they've been suffering for years For many centuries. The good people have rebelled on several occasions Each time, the oppressors with their lies, promises, gifts and tones Have engineered specious maneuvers to suffocate struggles, hypnotize Or put to sleep our citizens who are tired of fighting. Haiti, there's a time to moan A time to rejoice, and a time to finally harvest the victory. Brave Haiti Don't be discouraged. Haiti, I know that you're suffering, but the youth loves you Without respite. Long live the flag in mourning! Long live the Haitian flag That defied the cannons of the winds and the torpedoes of the hurricanes Long live the flag that slapped earthquakes! Long live Haiti! Long live the time! P.S. Long live the Haitian flag's day May 18,1803, at Arcahaie! Copyright © May 18,2020, Hébert Logerie, all rights reserved. Hébert Logerie is the author of several collections of poems.
