José Santos Chocano Gastañodi, born on May 14, 1875, in Lima, was a Peruvian poet known by the pseudonym “El Cantor de América”. He was the author of many collections, including La Selva Virgen: Poemas y Poesías (Garnier Hermanos, 1901) and Alma América (Librería de la Viuda de Charles Bouret, 1906). Highly active in the intellectual and political spheres of Latin America, he was jailed twice during his lifetime. He died on December 13, 1934.
