Weekends Away

We had a friend who had
A house in the country
Away from the drudge of city life
We gathered, made the smoke and fume
Of survival much
Easier to endure: swimming, picnics
Walks in the woods
Fires on cold nights in autumn.
We were the best together
More than we'd ever have been
Apart, yet I can't help
Wondering, would we have really been
Friends, if we hadn't known that
One fortunate fellow with a house
In the country.
