The Decaying Green

Walking along the path I heard leaves break Becoming like dirt under the soles of my shoes. They, in their millions, epitomized beauty And life, but now they decompose and wane. Today the streets are littered with their remnants And on tomorrow they shall be no more For Life halts as fate wields her unbiased winds, And death covers the land in shades of black. The loss makes one ponder: just yesterday The trees stood tall in their armor of green, Questioning - in rustle - even the breath of God, But today they lie alone - humbly unclothed. When many tomorrows pass they'd suit again Sprinklings of green would patch both shell and shield Making these soldiers stand in armor once more, In shine and numbers showing their glory. The same way great airplanes take from the birds So too does the economy from the wave of nature Such that one day the dollar is strong, and the next It dies, but surely like the trees it blooms again.
