Margaret Fairless Barber was born in 1869 in Rastrick, Brighouse, West Riding of Yorkshire, England. Struggling with a lifelong spinal condition and the loss of sight, she turned to writing, taking up the nom de plume Michael Fairless, under which her book, The Roadmender (Duckworth & Co., 1902), was posthumously published. She died in Henfield, West Sussex, England, in 1901.
