Gazing Into The Well

To write poetry,
is to retreat: —
back into my loneliness;
and abruptly, —plunge—
plunge into the depths of this well;
searching…
for sedimentary remnants
of what I have loved most! —
and I find you almost anoxic,
hidden there
deep in the darkness,
sending agitated ripples
upon the oily, silvery surface
of the water;
as a nocturnal creature,
dwelling in mystery, —trying—
trying to breathe under the water,
crawling upon the slippery tube—
the vertical tunnel…
with a tiny, intermittent light,
acerbically beckoning to hope:
I am that ever-present presence,
gazing into its own profoundness,
searching for you—
searching for your memory…
