Old Oak Tree

Autumn breeze, oak leaves, deciduous dreams,
Your living bark stores rings of memories,
Climatic changes, centuries of data,
Beneath my skin,
Each helix of my DNA still carries
Worlds before my conscious being.
We both are more than what we manifestly seem,
My old oak tree and me!
And though our embers scatter in a cruel breeze
Tomorrow we shall dress the earth
withmelodies of fresh green
With perennial presumption of our worth,
Tall and arrogant as befits our beings!
