Lonely Joy

Three A.M.
and the humid night
weeps softly
like a child.
A homeless man
smiles on the car-whispering boulevard
as I hand him a sandwich
from a twenty-four hour restaurant.
I remember
my childhood friends
like familiar songs
playing on the ancient transistor.
Life is a lonely joy
we celebrate and endure.
