Ruminations On Life

Is not our life a wave of energy coursing through us
Just like a flickering flame or a fleeting gleam
Which when stopped, like a weed scorched by the sun
Or a tree felled down by a merciless axe, we will lie
Is not our life like a theatrical performance
Where we don the roles we are commissioned to
Some of us play the roles of tyrants or kings
While some act as meek minions at their service
Is not our life a voyage through the rough seas
Where we paddle on and on over billowing waves
Never asking where we are heading to
Nor knowing when our trackless course ends
Is not our life, the footprints left on sandy shore
Washed away instantly by the incoming wave
Not able to measure their length or width
And never to trace where once they really lay
Is not our life as illusory as the mirage of the desert
Staying beyond our grasp and endlessly deluding
Sometimes dazzling like a verdant oasis
Sometimes bewildering like an awful nightmare
Is not our life a little space lying somewhere
Between our infant cradle and our grave
Where we struggle to secure our place
To be ousted soon by those who come after us
But we live on, never in despair but in hope
That beyond this mortal life and its struggles
Somewhere for us, eternity’s dim portals await
To harbor our souls that from deep slumber shall rise!
