HERE at right of the entrance this bronze head, Human, superhuman, a bird's round eye, Everything else withered and mummy-dead. What great tomb-haunter sweeps the distant sky…
İlk eseri Mosada (1886) büyüye olan ilgisini yansıtırken, The Wanderings of Oisin (1889) adlı eserinde Genç İrlanda hareketinin aşırı milliyetçiliğini dile getirdi. 1886'dan 1900'e kadar uzanan dönemde yazdığı şiirler Shelley, Spenser ve Ön Raffaellocular'dan etkilenmiştir. İrlanda mitolojisi ve temalarına odaklanan şiirleri mistik, yavaş tempolu ve lirik dille anlatılmıştır. Bu dönemde kaleme aldığı şiirlerden en bilinenleri arasında Falling of Leaves, When You Are Old ve The Lake Isle of Innisfree yer alır. 1893 yılında William Blake'in eserlerini düzenleyen Yeats'in toplu şiirleri 1895'de (Poems) yayımlandı. 'Those Dancing Days Are Gone' şiiri Carla Bruni'nin 2007 No Promises albümünde seslendirildi. Yazarın 'The Celtic Twilight' isimli kitabı 'Kelt Şafağı' ismiyle Türkçe'ye çevrilmiştir.
