Oh, that I could speak my heart And say the things I feel At the moment when they’re called for, When I know the need is real, But somehow I am tongue-tied, And words I want to say Are replaced by words I do not mean; But they come out anyway, And tomorrow I will think of all The things I could relate. Again, I wish the chance would come, But I know it is too late, Like you, I cannot answer Great thoughts on instant call; Like others, I must bite my tongue Or make no reply at all. You say my words have feeling- They cut true to the mark; These words that you are reading Were composed long after dark. They‘re just words upon a paper- My heart written in a poem, From quiet moments of reflection When the right words come along.
