You have been the role model For millions of people You set the example and showed a way For people of impaired vision, deafness or muted By your undying and incredible courage You fought mountains of obstacles And scripted a success story, that was unheard of. You were born in Tuscumbia, Alabama to mother Catherine Adams Keller and fatherArthur Henry Keller on 27th June, in the year eighteen eighty But who knew you would become deaf and blind At the age of nineteen months, falling sick to an unknown disease! But, your meeting with Anne Sulevan, changed the course of your life As she became your teacher and guide She taught you by drawing letters on your hand By giving you the feel of water under a tap She taught you to spell the first word From sign language to written words and then to spoken language Your journey was incredulous You rose to touch new heights By becoming the first Bachelor of Arts As a deaf and blind person in human history You became a prolific writer, lecturer and political activist You entered the Alabama Writers Hall of Fame As well as Alabama Women Writers Hall of Fame.
