God Of Small Things

At sundown There still lives a day Shining with its splendor wherein Love, dusk and dawn interplay And dawn is seen Crawling steadily to dusk to be blended in a fair way So as to be the brightest star for them and before stars one by one Come alive in their stately home sky They could see each other's countenance beaming like sun In ensuing nightfall where lice are falling like fishes on her palm leisurely As if cascading from a stream of dark and silky hair of a maiden With her magic stroke upon her crown of hair unkempt and left untidy Left disheveled for days together even But she looks curious and happy While counting them as falling as more than ten And mother is no less happy While seeing happiness in the glowing eyes of her daughter of seven cute as if our own Then she comes out from her shattered house, in day Open to the sun and rain And to stars and the moon and dew in night for as far as my eye Could scan I behold only flattened and shredded ruin Of the house the thatched roof of which is somewhere in the sky To see if her dearest souls have returned home in their barn Where cows, goats, sheep live together bellowing, mellowing and bleating low and high And unto nest follow the fleet of rooster, chicken and hen With cluck, squawk and chirp and crow upon she calls and casts her eyes in kindlier way The sounds of which at once recall her like their mother to see them home safe and halcyon And then under her love's sunshine they slumber in peace and harmony Till the daybreak when they are again seen Ready going to the hill and vale that bloom with mullein and thistle in plenty Where they graze and feed themselves till sundown Then she goes silent for a moment pensively And waits for her man To turn up after a day's toil away in fields of a country Then she brings out a cot upon The verandah to welcome him decorously While he comes at the stroke of seven With a pick and shovel in hands and from fields and valley Basket- full of vegetables fresh on head he carries like a love's mountain For they are his only phenomenon he dreams in infinitely And for immortality lives in Drunk as usual en route weariness to allay Home, he is seen lying down like a leaf blown away on in autumn While she rejuvenates him with the balm of love and some pleasure shy And night spreads her wings to entice them and it is almost midnight by ten Above stars twinkle and the moon looks on and then they shy away Seeing their celestial sphere where love is like a heaven for what is left in them save that boon to carry joy in a farm hand's eye They know why and know not when They come closer and flesh meets flesh divinely And soul meets soul and night meets dawn To see a day lovely Rising in the horizons of her eyes, nest, fields and barn
