Remember!

When I remember soldiers' lives laid down for freedom's sake, A melancholy soon arrives and, with it, more heartache. For many lives have paid its cost, and that I know right well, No wonder I recall what's lost and then say, WAR IS HELL. When I remember soldiers' prayers, in journals some had penned, I sense the burdens that each bears before their lives must end. I sense the secrets still untold and secrets they can't tell And all at once, my blood runs cold, and I say, WAR IS HELL. When I remember decades gone yet see this world today, I pray prayer warriors carry on the earnest prayers they pray. In truth, they won't lose God's reward as sad news they repel, And preach Good News, and serve the Lord, though they say, WAR IS HELL. When I remember medals worn with poppies by the score, My weary heart's somehow reborn, so I pray all the more. Though tears may come and trickle down, and I hold back a yell, I'll battle on despite each frown and still say, WAR IS HELL. Denis Martindale, for the 1st of November 2024.
