That Open Gate

The path led through an open gate
New fresh pastures there to find.
Just a few steps were needed now,
To leave the sad past behind.
An unknown future awaited,
My intrepid heart's desire.
To face a bright new tomorrow,
And set my old world on fire.
A short distance was remaining,
For me and the unexplored,
I crossed over to the unseen,
That the other side had stored.
But the track turned rough and stoney,
And not my so hoped for aim,
So thus back through that open gate,
I returned from whence I came.
