Walking Through The Fields

I watch the shadows of passing people through the nursing home window,
I long for choice,
Freedom is like the luxury of driving a Rolls-Royce,
I long for the fields around Carrick and the sweet sound of my sister's voice,
Laughing and chatting with her natural exuberance,
Like her words were preparing to dance,
In the easterly breeze,
With her sassiness as the day was seized,
I used to love picking the blackberries,
Underneath azure skies and feeling merry,
We would roam through the fields with a natural contentment,
That I would long for again and again in later years,
My marriage was controlled by fear,
A man of many moods,
Like the changing Irish skies dramatically etched
Into my mindset, living with him was a quest
To find peace like an impossible test,
My loving daughter Ivy and my son in law Dickie gave me a home
They are the best,
Tranquil years of living and loving,
My rheumatoid arthritis never stopped my day's beat,
No defeat
For my spirit rising to skies astray,
With the warmth of sunshine rays,
I walked in a slow, painful way,
I always had scope to make friends each day,
Years flew by with such ease,
Now I'm bed ridden and life is just a tease,
Looking out the window at fleeting shadows,
Watching people pass by and hating this foe,
I long for the fields around Carrick
And my favourite sister's towering personality,
She was like a tornado of energy in the tranquil county Offaly fields,
Our happy appeal,
As my eyes close I'm with her hand in hand
Walking through the fields of Carrick,
Basking in the morning sunshine
Of a childhood memory so fine.
