Heart's Burden

You're wise, can you help me answer this? What force drives one to surrender their kiss? Besides insanity I find no candidate. Without madness all will be celibate! Yet we love and live daily in its quest. It's the cause of every suit-every fancy dress. To impress- to find or keep someone to love. Love's a burden whose weight is ne'er spoken of. The heart is heavy, every one of its cells full. Yet it craves love like a gluttonous fool. It deems itself complete as apple of her eyes And to her every beckon it acts as if obliged: Directing its eyes to look the other way, Directing hand not to touch or with others play. And if they stray the heart breaks the heart that at times it wishes to do away with some parts. It thinks it best that eyes lose sight than look on 'other, or tongue be dumb than share its brook. It refuses to give the one it holds dirty water. The one it loves it considers heaven's daughter and it is this which saves the wayward factors. For the sake of seeing the one who give it laughter Eyes remain, only because its heaven is her smile, And heart wonders why these parts give a while To any but she, who gives love to last an eternity. The heart is burdened, and its burden lies with me. Copyright © 2010 Leslie Alexis
