The Awakening

A cold darkness hung over me Like a mourning widow's veil, The only notions of love I had I read about in a fairy tale From my dark sleep I could not wake, Lulled by a most bitter song, Asleep, tangled in life's muddled threads, Yet, aware of my pain all along Imprisoned in my loneliness I would while away my day, Waiting for an angel to arrive To deliver me from such decay And then came the glorious moment, His love woke my dormant heart, From my nightmare I was gently roused, Slowly, the darkness seemed to depart Awake at last, I tasted life With a sweetness I'd never known, Warmth and light flooded over my soul, Dead were the seeds of woe life had sown But darkness lingered by my door.... Tapping at my window pane, I scoffed, and vowed it would never find A safe harbor in my heart again Love touched my heart, then walked away, It was never mine to keep, Bitter is the song of loneliness, Once again, sadness lulls me to sleep
