The Confession

Last evening, my darling came to me,
Burdened with anguish and fears;
It saddened me to see his pain,
When I kissed him, I tasted tears
I held him so very close to me,
Trying to ease his distress;
He hesitated, and then he spoke,
He had something he must confess
With tear-filled eyes he looked at me,
And I knew he had been untrue;
A flirtatious girl attracted him,
And he did what most men would do
O Lord, I had to forgive him,
Though my heart was broken in two;
We all make mistakes, we must forgive,
And I did what few women do
I could not turn away from him,
I felt his pain and his fears;
I told him I'd forgive and forget,
When we kissed, we both tasted tears
As the crimson sun was setting,
The peace of night descended;
A guilty heart found sweet repose,
And a shattered heart was mended
A dove of purest white flew by,
Straight from heaven, or so it seems;
In each other's arms we fell asleep,
And then we made love in our dreams
