The Message

I heard the birds this morning, They awakened me from a dream; I was sinking in a sea of despair, Drowning, but I couldn't scream The birds, they sang a warning, Things are not what they should be, Our rights are being challenged, The rights that keep us free I seemed to understand their song, It had the rhythm of life, Their song was like a freedom march, Led by a drum and fife The birds would rather die being free, Than be well-fed in a cage; They sense a mighty battle brewing, And soon, we must all engage Our law makers take pride in defending The rights of the unborn, While slaughter by guns is acceptable, Defenders' reasoning, so tired and worn The country is fed up and weary Of all the hypocrisy! 'Life is precious, ' but executions are cheered, And constant war is a 'necessity' Civil rights are being challenged, Rights for which so many died; A God-given right saying we're all equal, That challenge will be met, and with pride! The message of the birds was clear: 'Wake up, wake up, it's time! ' Too many are defending the very things That contribute to misery and crime The hypocrisy makes my blood boil, Pro-lifers can't have it both ways; Guns, executions, abortions and wars - All should be abolished today But we all know that won't happen, Life is too complex and bizarre; So let's step down from the moral pulpit, And admit to what we really are We're creatures who make mistakes, We're not perfect, and never will be; Stop trying to control women's bodies, Stop interfering with democracy! It's the hypocrisy we shouldn't tolerate, It's the old misfits criticizing the youth, It's the killers calling the rest of us sinners, It's the liars demanding the truth! Wars will be fought, guns will be bought, And executions carried out, as before; If you really believe we'll face God someday, Let Him be the Judge - He's keeping score! In the meantime, let's agree on something: Don't we all deserve a fair share Of happiness, and life's basic necessities - Can we make this happen - do we dare?
