To Madam Moon

There are several hypotheses
About your origin and genesis
Some argue you were born
When another celestial vagabond
Hit Mother Earth and had her apart torn
Yet others wager
You were captured
By her in her cosmic sojourn
Then came the fission theory
You were a part of Earth
Before you separated
Leaving a deep scar
That now is Ocean Pacific
Dissatisfied ones then propounded
A double-system of Earth and Moon
In the primordial accretion disc
Of a churning solar system
That slowly put you in orbit
Around our mother as her natural satellite
Post man's landing on your lap
These theories have lost their sap
Now even some credible minds
Propose that you are perhaps a hollow object
Most unlike a natural satellite
Ufologists are having a field day
Surmising you are an emptied body
Moved across galactic spans
And placed in exact orbit of our mother
By some supreme intelligence
So that we have the tides
The seasons that rain and flower
Beautiful falls when maples blush
And make Earth a friendly habitat
A paradise in unfriendly wilderness
Whatever the theories, dear Madam
You lady with a grave smile
As the poet said
The ancients in my land
Made you represent mother and mind*
One who moved human emotions
Like tidal waves that swayed ocean breasts
So much so that an epic hero** of ours
A god avatar went lachrymose
Looking at you in a lonely night
Separated from his abducted mate
You look so beautiful and bright
My heart gets wrung at your sight
In lonely wintry nights
Remembering an old teenage beloved
Who cares if you are hollow
And how you had your genesis
You are there to rule my heart
Make me sing songs for a love long-lost
Be there in orbit
My hollow madam
As long as my eyes are powered to look
And sing songs of love and ache
Through seasons that rain and smile

*In Indian astrology, moon represents mother and mind.
**The lonely hero of India's epic Ramayana (Rama) , separated from his wife Sita, who was abducted by the demon-king Ravana, went profusely tearful looking at the full moon. Rama is an avatar. It implies that the moon can sway even the minds of gods.
