Another Town, Another Gym.

As I hurry upstairs I hear clinking, clunking sounds
on the left: mostly weights being put down
by men doing the clean and jerk and bench presses.
In the room on the right are the cardio machines
which beckon me. This is a rowing city, with a river,
so I start on the single sculls machine,
which records distance rowed on a screen
and the number of calories burned per hour.
I then head for the exercycle and level pedalling,
then up an incline, which is harder on me
but it is where I burn more calories.
I finish the hour on the treadmill,
where my heart rate gets up to 200 a minute.
The red screen numbers tell me all I need to know.
At the end of the workout I discover my true self
which I cannot find anywhere else.
