Memories Of Taumarunui.

I lived in Taumarunui for three years.
It was an isolated inland King Country town,
where I soon settled in to the high school.
My father was the manager of an auto workshop
where he always operated in top gear.
The nearby ranges, clad with evergreen trees,
challenged me to adapt to the new environment,
and forget the seaside town we had come from.
Our family of eight arrived in Taumarunui
in my father's black Dodge sedan
from the assembly line in Detroit.
We were excited abouta new life.
The hills, milk bars and jukeboxes of Taumarunui
call to mind on my long drive today,
the ghosts of yesterday.
