Sorrow.

The sun is low in the western sky this evening
on my jog beside the river in the heat.
The water isrippling blue with wavelets
on the incomimg tide: it is like a painting to me.
Alas the pohutukawas have shed their red flowers,
now looking plain dull green along the roadside,
although the eucalypts still have their scarlet ones
which console me although they assert themselves less.
I had to miss the Masters Games this week
with a leg injury which made the calf muscles weak.
That let-down, and when I feel the bruises,
gets me down even on the run.
However, I feel lifted up when I hear from a stereo
David Bowie singing 'Sorrow'.
