The Lemon Tree.

In winter I would wake up on cold mornings,
draw back the bedroom curtains to see the lemon tree
growing alone in the garden and flourishing,
with ripe, yellow lemons there for the taking.
I soon did pick those lemons to make
my own lemon drinks, using a squeezer,
a strainer, sugar and honey, which was easy.
My lemon drinks tasted as sweet as success.
Now it is spring and the lemons are small
and shrivelled and not worth using.
I went back to buying lemonade and lemon cordial,
which were still sparkling and energizing.
I planted a few more fruit trees
to give my lonely friend company.
This morning I drew back the black curtains:
The lemon tree had promising flower buds.
