As a child I used to listen to the stories
From mythologies narrated by my mother.
Birth of Venus is one such story
She picked up from the Greek Myth.
I remember that she never used
The word Anadyomene, which in Greek
Meant, ‘Rising from the Sea', because
Venus rose from the sea a fully grown adult.
Mother went on to draw analogy between
Venus and the Indian Goddess Lakshmi,
Emerged as a godly woman of youthful grace,
From the depths of Kshirasagara, the Ocean of Milk,
When it was churned by Devas and Asuras,
In search of Amrutha, the nectar of immortality.
Thereafter, in all the three worlds*,
the lotus-bearing Goddess was celebrated.
Thus Goddess Lakshmi
Is the Indian Anadyomene.
