Dünyanın bir felakete sürüklendiği savunan Katastrofistler denilen bir grubun önderiydi. Polonya'nın Naziler tarafından işgal edilmesi üzerine direniş hareketine katıldı. Polonya'da sosyalistler iktidara gelince (1946) Washington D.C.'de kültür ataşeliği ve Paris'te kültür işleri müsteşarlığı yaptı. 1951'de siyasi mülteci olarak Fransa'ya sığındı. 1960'da ABD'ne giderek Kalifornia Üniversitesi Berkeley kampusünde öğretim üyesi oldu; 1970'de ABD vatandaşlığına kabul edildi. 1978'de Uluslar arası Neustadt Ödülü'nü, 1980'de Nobel Edebiyat Ödülü'nü kazandı.
