That's When I Miss Him

I dread when the sun begins to set,
Now I understand the nightbird's cries,
I curse this anguish of missing him,
And it brings instant tears to my eyes
Once I was strong as the mighty oak,
Now, like the willow, I weep and bend,
Though a deceiving smile curves my lips,
How I deplore this game of pretend!
With my arms outstretched I imagine
He'll come to me as the night grows cold,
O, foolish heart, can you not admit
Such fond dreams are not yours to unfold?
So why do dreams still knock at my door?
Long ago I burned the welcome mat,
Just to provoke me, the night shows up
With the moon..... can you imagine that!
Memories of him cascade like dust,
Falling endlessly through my fingers,
With a deep sigh, I sweep them away,
But a speck of dust always lingers
Alone in the dark I count the hours,
O, Lord, how slowly they seem to crawl,
The pain grows worse from midnight through dawn,
That's when I'm missing him most of all
