I Would Like To Sing

I would like to sing Without crying I would like to write Without swearing To defend the humiliated people And my marginalized country Where babies are thrown to the sewers In the poisoned corners of corrupt and insane Where children are forgotten and abandoned In filthy dirt, contaminated, and polluted streets Where women are vilified, trampled, and raped And men are enslaved, effete, looted, robbed, and shot Even dogs kneel to drink and to bark And cats are hunted by drunk and drug addicted rats In the heat of such an earthly hell, I will not shut up And I will speak up to the path of death. My country! O my dear country Formerly, a long time ago, a paradise In this dark vileness, where the sun shines The nation, the peasantry and the inhabitants sparkle In the wind; the Poet is hardly Engaged but indeed revolted, he is a Patriot at war Against injustice, evil, racism, abuses, nonsense, dust And the ignominy of a people groaning in misery O my Ancestors! The people are flouted and zombified Nevertheless, the poor citizens will vote for another thug Who will shame us again. At the bottom of the jumble There will be more hypocrite scums to gnaw, to ruin The heart and soul of the scrapes that the misers have dumped At the edge of the shore. Let me drink the last drink To exorcise or to write the last verses Before going to the grave of our unhappy Ancestors Where the hurricane of freedom cools off the sybaritic air I would like to sing Without crying I would like to write Without cursing Provided the underprivileged people can live As Human Beings in peace and free.
