Crossing The Bridge.

I know a few bridges in my country by driving over them, which is the best way to get the feel and safety. My favourite is the Auckland Harbour Bridge, a cantilever one, which connects the city Viaduct with theNorth Shore. I like the drive uphill then downhill from about the middle pier and the choice of eight lanes, which include four 'Nippon clip-ons'. The Auckland Harbour Bridge is traffic-only, no cyclists or pedestrians. It should stay that way but there are plans to add more clip-ons for that arrogant pressure group. However, the Sydney Harbour Bridge, a steel through-arch structure, supported by massive granite pylons at each end has clean, straight lines andcycle and pedestrian lanes. Last year I walked over the bridge from The Rocks to the North Shore. In the seventies I walked over the modern London Bridge, from Southwark to Monument, astounded by the views of the City, but alsoaffected by the poem about this place: ' A crowd flowed over London Bridge, so many, I had not thought death had undone so many.' - 17-19 June 2020.
